Chrome extension: Invalid API key
This error appears when the API key entered in the extension settings is incorrect or no longer exists. The extension uses this key to securely connect to your Alt Text Lab account — without it, it can’t generate alt text.
Possible causes
- You entered the API key incorrectly (e.g. missing or extra characters).
- You pasted a partial or broken key.
- The API key was deleted in your account settings.
How to fix it
Follow these steps to get your API key and add it to the extension:
- Log into your account
Go to AltTextLab.com and log in. - Go to the API key settings page
Once you're logged in, navigate to API key settings. - Create a new API key
- Click the Create API key button.
- In the popup window, enter a name for your key — this name is just for you, so you can tell where you're using it (e.g. For chrome extension).
- Click Create API Key. - Copy the API key
Your new key will appear. Click to copy it. - Open the extension options in Chrome
In your browser, click the puzzle icon in the toolbar to open the list of installed extensions.
Find AltTextLab.com – Alt Text Generator, click the three dots next to it, then choose Options. This will open the extension options page in a new tab. - Remove the old key from the extension
In the API Key field, delete the old key completely. - Paste your API key
Find the API Key field and paste the key you copied earlier. - Save the settings
Click Save to confirm your changes. - Refresh the page
Go back to the webpage where you want to use the extension and refresh it.
